Both facial toners and treatment lotions help refresh the skin and maintain skin’s pH balance. The main function of a face toner is to help clear your skin of dirt, makeup or excess oil left behind after cleansing, though it can have additional benefits. A treatment lotion gives that added weightless layer of hydration post cleansing. Both face toner and treatment lotion can also help maintain skin’s pH balance. And both facial toners and treatment lotions help prep the skin for any serums or moisturizers used in the next step of your skincare routine.

The main function of a face toner is to help clear your skin of dirt, makeup or excess oil left behind after cleansing to help prep the skin for what comes next. A treatment lotion is designed to help refresh skin, gives that added a weightless layer of hydration post cleansing, while still prepping the skin for any serums or moisturizers used in the next step of your skincare routine. Both face toner and treatment lotion can also help maintain skin’s pH balance.

There are several benefits to using face toner. First and foremost, splashing a facial toner on your choice of cotton or reusable pad and swiping it across your face helps eliminate lingering traces of dirt, oil, or environmental impurities left behind after cleansing. By removing residual residue and creating a clear canvas, a face toner can help pave the way for better absorption of your treatment products, like serum and moisturizer. A face toner can also help reduce the look of shine. Look for a face toner with pore-clearing Salicylic Acid, like Zero Oil™ Pore Purifying Toner with Saw Palmetto and Mint, if your skin is on the oily side.

Both face toner and treatment lotion are applied after cleansing. You can use one or the other, or you can use both. If you have dry or sensitive skin, it’s often recommended to cleanse, use a facial toner to remove residual impurities, and then apply a treatment lotion, like Mega-Mushroom Relief & Resilience Treatment Soothing Lotion, with Reishi and Fermented Chaga Mushroom, for a splash of skin-calming hydration. Oily skin types may want to apply face toner only—preferably one containing Salicylic Acid to help control oil—and follow with serum and moisturizer. If you have dry or sensitive skin, you may choose to use face toner less frequently—once a day or maybe even every other day –or go straight to the Treatment Lotion step!

Toners are generally applied twice daily, in the morning and night, as part of a comprehensive skincare routine. After cleansing, apply a small amount of facial toner to a cotton pad and gently swipe it across the face and neck. Follow with serum and moisturizer. Following your face toner application with a treatment lotion is recommended for a splash of soothing hydration.
